Question 1: The Greatest Generation

The World War II generation has often been called The Greatest Generation. What is it about this time period that would justify this label? Do you agree with this assessment of the people who lived through the war years? What of these qualities do you think your generation can aspire to have?

  1. WW II was a horrible time so people who lived through that time are lucky to be alive. They went through so many hardships to go through but they did. I agree with the assessment of the people because they had to be strong. Really strong. Not just physically but mentally so they could get through. I think our generation should have the quality of always staying positive. If we gave up back then we would die. It is not as critical now to stay positive but it would help a lot.

  2. They were probably labeled this because of what they survived through. They survived through a bloody, terrible, financial damaging war, they survived through the great depression, they survived through the killing of millions of people. None of them were faint hearted. I completely agree with that statement. People nowadays don't fight for what they believe in. If stuff get's hard they run. We're so reliant on Twitter, and Instagram, and Coldplay, and chocolate chip cookies. If we grew up we could become a great generation.

  3. The WWII generation has been through so much and seen so much that they are considered the greatest. I agree because they had seen so many incredible and tragic events that are so iconic that nobody else has seen. I think my generation has one of the greatest technological advances in history.

  4. During the World War II years many things happened that gave the name The Greatest Generation. For example, the coming out of the Holocaust and having the jews be equal. The separation of Germany into two parts, east and west. Many more of the iconic events have been remembered through movies as well.

  5. I would agree with this statement because, they faced a lot of struggles that were prominent for everyone and effected more people. The after effects of events were more noticeable then the ones of today. In my opinion, if a tragedy happened the people would pay more attention and see that change needs to happen within themselves and actually make a strong attempt to change for the better. I think my generation can aspire to have all of these qualities as well, but first we have to make a change within us.

  6. I think the surplus of artwork and expression people from this era justifies the the label given. I do agree with this assessment, strongly. Our generation lacks motivation and we sit back and act like political choices and changes have nothing to do with our lives. We should start to strive to involve ourselves like them and stand up for whats right instead of only using our voices if the issue or change affects us directly.

  7. I do agree with this being the greatest generation in a way because i believe it doesn't mean greatest as in most enjoyable(obviously) but greatest as in the most eventful and pulse rising chain of events that happened in this generation. the war, explosions, and many deaths kept everyone in this time period on edge.

  8. The main thing that would justify this label was the holocaust and the high amount of jewish people that lost there lives. I do agree with the assessment that the people who lived through the war years that it is the greatest generation because they went through so many things and that is a great achievement for those people. The qualities that I think our generation to aspire to have is to get through this whole isis crisis which I believe we will get through it.

  9. In the years of World War II we established a lot, such as fighting against segregation. We have overcome things that were set up to knock us down and stop us from becoming the better people that we are today. I think that we don't understand and give enough credit to the people that went through World War II and the Cold War and came out on the other side. I think that we can aspire to be brave, strong, and ready to break through the boundaries that will restrict us from becoming who we really are.

  10. What justify World War II as the "Greatest Generation" is because the way the military protect the people for example when armies fought to help the Jews not only because they had to but its because its the right thing to do. Yes I agree that they were the "Greatest Generation" because they were put through a lot like the Great Depression. The qualities I think our generation should get from this is to never give up. People that live in the war years did not give up even when it look like they should. They kept on fighting and push through and overcame.

  11. The world war generation is labeled the best generation because of all the struggles that those people conquered during the war.By just living through the tough time was an accomplishment. Worrying about your loved ones being over there giving there lives for the safety of others. Giving to those even when you barely had enough for yourself. I think one of the biggest qualities that my generation doesnt not have is gratitude. We are constantly complaining about what we dont have and being jealous of the things that others have that we become selfish when there are thousands of people in this whole world wishing they had the things that we have. We need to show gratitude towards the things we do have because one day that could be us.

  12. The thing that would justify the World War ll generation as the Greatest generation, is all the events that happened. There were many things that happened during World War ll which people had to live through, i think this made them the greatest generation because, they saw things first hand and they didn't want them to happen again. This caused people to become more aware of what was happening around the world, which then inspired people to try and make things better for everyone. I think my generation should aspire to care for others and not just ourselves. We should be able to see something wrong and try our hardest to make it better, just like the World War ll generation.

  13. The patriotism, how hard everyone worked, and that everyone helped out somehow even in really small ways. I disagree with the assessment because some groups of people in other countries were greedy, and wanted to go to war for more territory, which isn't really that great. Qualities my generation should aspire to have is ingenuity and a good work ethic.

  14. I think the generation of people alive during ww2 was the greatest generation because those people all cared about helping the country. Every man, woman, and child was, in some way, a part of the war effort and to me that shows great braveness and courage. I think our generation could be immensely more helpful toward one another. During the war years people were all about helping the soldiers, or consoling families of fallen soldiers, now it seems like this generation is all about themselves, and no one is worried about their neighbor. I agree with the statement that the ww2 generation was the greatest because they didn't always put themselves first.

  15. The time period would justify this label because they were going through The Great Depression due to the war and they got through it. It was a very difficult time to be alive so, I agree that they were The Greatest Generation. This is simply because everyone was so strong and with everything they had to go through they were brave, never gave up, and they were grateful for everything they had. Even if that was just a sack of potatoes and a small house with 4 other people, they were still gracious. I think our generation should aspire to be as grateful as they were. Our generation is spoiled and we need to remember that we are very fortunate to have everything we have.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The Greatest Generation is named that because of all the bad and horrible things they saw during the war. The time period can justify that they were the Greatest Generation because the war effected everyone, soldiers, citizens, and the children. The children of this time had to get used to giving things up for the soldiers, something kids these days are great at is being selfish. The everyday citizens also had to work hard to produce supplies for the soldiers such as food, vehicles, weapons, and uniforms. Some women even joined the Air Force as WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots). In today's US military many women have joined many branches of the US armed defense. The soldiers of the time had it pretty rough which only made them stronger and to fight harder. Yes that generation was the greatest, it had many inventions that inspired other inventions today. If my generation could learn anything from The Great Generation it would to never give up and to fight for whats right.

  17. I would say that they were the greatest generation, because to be able to live through such a time period where there is so much work and sacrifice is truly iconic. I think that they deserve this label because they worked day in and day out. I also think they were very selfless and giving considering there circumstances. I completely agree with this statement. I think my generation could aspire to work hard for what they want and to be proactive in there desires and to make goals for themselves. I feel my generation should strive to be different. It would be nice of once to here that someone in my generation has moved away form the norm.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think The Greatest Generation would justify this period because many people died through this time and if you survived World War II then you are the strongest. Hitler died. I agree with this assessment. For our generation, we need to mentally be stronger because we have been spoiled by modern America to the point that people cry when their phones shut off or if something is on their Jordan's. But back then people were crying because their whole family died or when they had a storage on food.

  19. World War II is considered The Greatest Generation because it was during
that time that our country grew and developed the most. Those who lived through World War II are considered "great" as result of the hardship
they endured, such as the great depression and the holocaust. I do not agree with calling this generation " The Greatest Generation" because we are celebrating the fact that government power was used for personal profit and glorifying sacrifice and bravery for the cause of war. Seeing war as an act of heroism.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The thing about this generation is the kind of people in this generation that did something to contribute to the greatest generation and just that happened, good and bad. I do agree with the assessment of the people who lived through the war years like my Tuskegee airmen, and Franklin Roosevelt. I don't agree with dropping an atomic bomb on innocent asian families though. I think my generation can also contribute to a great generation, but not the greatest. We have tremendous president in Barack Obama, and the government in general. We have the numbers of the people to change the world. We just have to stay on one accord.

  21. I feel the generation of WWII kind of set up our lives of how we live today. Without going through what we went through as a nation we wouldn't know how to overcome. I think the Greatest Generation would totally agree with this statement because this time is so iconic. It was time when people's faith was put to the test. Many people lost their lives, but they went out honorable, fighting for what they believe in. That's what makes them the greatest. I agree with this statement all the way. The current generation and future ones can aspire to keep faith, hold on to the hope that things will turn out okay.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The WWII generation was definitely the best because of the astounding greatness and leadership formed in this time period. Without that what would shape our nation into what it is now and get the U.S. out of the great depression? If it were our generation we'd still be in the depression or worse.
Those put through the hardships of WWII had a sense of commitment to this country and tried to pull it out of the mud. They are who we have to thank for being one of the top countries in the world.

  23. People, who were labeled "The Greatest Generation" lived throughout the WW2; I believe when they label people that way, I think they are saying that those people lived through the toughest time and they survived on top of that. I do agree with that assessment of the people, they had to become very self-sufficent during those times. Those people watched and or seen these disasters. I think our generation we just aren't challenging ourselves much as before.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The people that lived through WWII and their generation had more patriotic and teamwork morals. People at that time wanted to go off to War and wanted to fight for what they believed in instead of accepting what was happening. And everybody did anything to help, women broke the gender stereotype and went to work after men went to fight. When the government started rationing food for soldiers they made the best of it instead of starting an uprising in their country. People felt they had a duty to protect and serve their beliefs and their people, no matter if they were being oppressed or not. Our generation could learn a lot from the "Greatest Generation" about standing by what you believe in and being willing to fight for it, even if your country has been invaded and is telling you otherwise. We could learn a few things about gluttony and what is the real value of material possessions, people back then didn't want the newest technology, they wanted to help the fight, and help keep their morals alive. The "Greatest Generation" had more passion and fight in them and we have lost that spark in this generation.

  25. I agree that the World War ll generation is the "Greatest Generation". Surviving through the harsh times of that era had to be very difficult and takes very strong people. I know for a fact that the generation that I am in today, could never be in the position that they were. I think my generation could aspire to have a few qualities from them like..being strong, sticking together, being able to cope, and just all together forming a stronger community because of whats happening all around us.

  26. The people that lived through this time period had to deal with a lot of tragic news and had to constantly be on the radar for surprise attacks from other enemies. I agree because they had to live through a lot of hardships during the war and they came out strong and on top.We should aspire to have the positive mindset that they had because they always looked on the bright side and didn't dwell on the negatives and thats something that we all should want to have as a generation of young people.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I believe World War II was the greatest generation because of the hardships they went through that way we wouldn't have to deal with it as we are living today. Some of the qualities our generation can aspire to is to be as selfless as possible. The people back then wouldn't mind having to fight for their country if it meant that they would have to die. And back then people would have to go though a lot for them to just break down on the floor and cry. Now we get frustrated, sad, and/or mad when someone just looks at us a certain way. Or we get upset if our shoes get stepped on. I think our generation could also aspire to have thick skin as they did.

  28. I think they were label as that because of how they survived through the rough and toughest times. I also agree on why the WWII generation was the best because how they showed courage, and strength. people look up to them as their heroes. the qualities that my generation can aspire on is that they didn't give up, they were committed to have us in deep depression.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I believe it was called The Greatest Generation because the people who endured this hardship were undeniably strong. To have gone through such a burdensome time and say you survived is a momentous accomplishment. It also showed how patriotic they were. The people of that generation were prepared to help their country and their allies when they needed them most.
Generations now I feel are starting to lose the strength they had and the will to do whats right i believe that is why the World War II generation was named the Greatest Generation.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It was called the Greatest Generation becuase World War II made them brave and strong. So, yes, I agree with this label. I think my generation can aspire to be as strong as The Greatest Generation because, since nothing like World War II has happened to strengthen us, we are weak.

    ReplyDelete
  31. People call the WW2 generation "The Greatest Generation" since it was the largest war in the last century and because during that time the Allies (the good guys) fought the Axis (the bad guys) and "won". Thus making the people who made the "good guys" win are great people.

The people who lived through these times faced threats and dangers but so has every other generation. Great things happened in that era but there was also rampant racism and sexism, so all in all I think that they were no greater than every other generation. Also being born at a certain time doesn't automatically make someone great.

Our generation should aspire to make sure there is another generation and to try to create new things, to end poverty, and to end discrimination, as the WW2 generation did.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I do believe that they are the greatest generation because they lived throughout the war, they felt with the war, and they made the best of the war situations, and because of this these people became stronger mentally, they became more resourceful. My generation could learn from this to dont worry about small things live life and make the best of it.

  33. I think the WWII generation was labeled "The Greatest Generation" because they survived not just WWII, but the great depression and they faced many hardships (although the generation's economy was much boosted by the war). Personally, I don't agree with this assessment because this generation's economy (after the war) was far better than it is now and on top of that, their social equality was lacking. Even now, we are stuck with the older generation's morals and conservative values, although we're still desperately trying to fight them. The so called "Greatest Generation" aren't as great as they made themselves out to be. I can't discredit them for their hardship, though. I think the qualities my generation can aspire to have (and do aspire to have in many cases) is the social equality we're lacking. From Women to Men to Bigender and Transgender (and all those in between), from Black to Hispanic to White to Asian (and the many others), from the young to the old to the people in between, from the Catholics to Jewish to Muslim and Atheists (and not forgetting the rest), right now things aren't very equal, as much as people say they are. I think my generation is slowly but surely (at least from what I know) trying to eradicate this. To do a better job on not judging on what makes up a person but who they are and understanding the circumstances in which a person was derived from. So I don't really think our generation can aspire to have many qualities of the old generation because even the not giving up part can sometimes be too much under certain circumstances (not the same one, fully, of course).
((I could write an essay on this, but I'll leave it here.))

  34. I believe the reason the World War II generation is often called the "greatest generation" is because of their perseverance. Everyone in that generation went through so many difficult times and that is a true testament to their character. I definitely would have to agree with this statement because I understand the war years are so tough to live through. I think my generation could aspire to have more perseverance and strength with a willingness to pull through when times get tough. Too many of us will just give up and not have any motivation to keep going. A great example of strength is World War II's greatest generation.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think because of the tragedy's that occured during this time period that it would be given that title. This generation needs to look back on those years and see how people were so strong. We need to fight for what is right and take a stand. These people that lived through the war have so much courage and a legacy that is passed from generation to generation. We need to respect these brave prisoners, and soldiers, and family members.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I believe that WW2 was an age that taught people the great qualities of patience, courage, and kindness. To bare through the constant financial struggles of The Great Depression while trying to provide for one's family, a person has to get pretty creative. Men were drafted from everywhere all over the US and had to leave their wives, children, and parents behind in order to fight battles they may not have come out of. It took true courage for these men to leave with the uncertainty that they would every see their families again. It also took true courage for the women in the families to "hold down the fort" while the men were gone. All of America learned the quality of patience. They had to remain patient while the seemingly endless war required donations of money, food, and materials like tin and rubber. Kindness was also brought out of many struggling citizens as they had to take in different families who would pay rent to live in other's houses with them. My house was actually part of this system and took in three families during WW2. Overall, the WW2 era has earned its title as "The Greatest Generation" because all of the United States worked together as a team in order to accomplish the goal of ending the war. Today, we can learn from the great qualities that Americans had during the WW2 time period. We need patience in order to keep a balanced country, to remain as one body, and to respect each other's ideas of how to govern the country. We must remain courageous in order to support our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as many other countries. Courage helps thousands of Americans every day save lives after natural disasters or stay confident in our government and military after terrorist attacks. Without courage, we are scattered and have no goal but to hide from the bad guy. Lastly, this generation needs kindness. This is a quality that I think we lack today. Sure, there are many kind people who would never hurt anyone else, but this is not what it means to be kind. The meaning of kindness is not to 'not hurt' anyone, but it is to go out of your way and make a sacrifice for another person. If our generation gets rid of this constant discrimination toward each other, we can truly unite as "one nation under God". I'm not saying that everyone was kind during The Great Depression, but I'm saying that they were humbled by the lack of food and money, learned to be appreciative, and how to sacrifice for others.

  37. I definately believe that it is the amount of hardships, struggles and sacrifices people were forced to endure that shaped them into the strong people they were. Therefore it is very fitting in my opinion to label the WWII generation the 'greatest generation'. They endured easily the worst events of the twentieth century so overcoming that would definately make them great. From the people who were in concentration camps, soldiers, and even people living at homes under the circumstances the events of WWII definately contributed largely to the mindset and mode of survival in people all over the world.

    ReplyDelete
  38. This time period of World War II justifies the label The Greatest Generation because this war tested the morals and courage of so many people . It showed that people were willing to fight for their countries and risk their lives to have their rights and freedom and protect the rights and freedoms of others. The people living in this time period are courageous for going through another major war. They had to deal with one of the worst time period and events in all of history, people who were killing other people only because they were Jewish or the soldier had been told to. I agree that the people who risked their lives for these principals were the greatest generation. I think some qualities that my generation should aspire to have are to be more brave and not care what other people think. Believe in what you believe in and don't lose sight of it. My generation can also be more active in helping society and others in need. We should learn to appreciate what we have, because in World War II the things we have would have only been a dream.

  39. I believe World War II one was called the Greatest Generation because of the people living in this era. The people could still show kindness and courage in times of hardships and struggles. These people went through the Great Depression together, which made them stronger. People died, lost their homes, and families. But through this all, they still managed to come together and help each other in times of need. I definitely agree with this assessment because the people of World War II still managed to get through hardships. I honestly don’t believe our generation can aspire to have any of these great qualities of that generation. The teens and youth of this generation are vicious; they have no courage or kindness. All they care about is Instagram likes. I hope someday the teens and youth of this generation will realize there is more important things in the world, and we can all come together to make a change for the better.

  40. The World War II generation has often been called the The Greatest Generation and this is for a good reason. This generation had to go through so many hardships of multiple kinds happening all around the world at the same time! For one there was a huge war going on, and for a war to happen troops had to be supplied. Troops didn’t just pop out of nowhere, real people had to leave their homes to go fight. Not only was it hard for people to fight a war, but then the troop’s families didn’t have husbands and sons to help out with work so this caused economic hardships which led to the Great Depression! So while a war was going on there also was the Great Depression. The amazing thing is even through this hard time, people still survived and made it through this period of hardships, which definitely earned their titled of The Greatest Generation and of the strongest one too! From looking at all of these amazing stories of people who went through this tough time, our generation most definitely needs to step up our game. People of this time came together to try to get through this hard time and our generation needs to work on working as a country! If these people could come together as a strong, unified nation under these rough circumstances than we should be able to as well!

  41. The time period of WWII would probably be called The Greatest Generation since the people who were mostly victims in that period suffered through a lot and somehow some managed to survive. I do agree that the assessment of the people who lived during the war years. I feel that my generation has hoped for things and when not achieved for those things they become disappointed and miserable and decide to do nothing to reach their goals. Unlike the people in the war they hoped for better and some stood up and achieved their goals.

  42. Undoubtedly, the span of World War II presented a mountain of challenges year after year. Regardless, of one’s allegiance or country, each and every individual had to surpass unimaginable odds. From the very beginning, the war introduced, political, economic, and even psychological challenges. As a result, revolutionary shifts in the development of weapons, the roles of women in society, and the standard of living occurred. As far as the advancement of fire power goes, the years of World War II achieved above and beyond what had previously been done. Women became imperative to the domestic and regional infrastructures to countries around the world. Their jobs expanded past the confines of the home and reached new heights in the industrial, military, and corporate spheres. In spite of the bounds that women took during this time, total war caused an increase in poverty and competition for higher paying jobs. While, the “Greatest Generation” would be a well-deserved title for those who weathered the effects of the war, the term that seems to be more fitting is the “Lost Generation.” A pre-existing appellation for the same group the “Greatest Generation” refers to, the sacrifice of youth who had to step into the shoes of adults and grow up in weeks rather than years is addressed. However, it seems too simplistic to reduce a generation to either “great” or “lost”, but if accredited as great it seems plausible to assume that people possess enough strength to persevere; thus hindering the ardency for change. The years of World War II should not be thought of solely as a triumph or as a point of reference for potential strife that could be overcome, but as an ineffable tragedy. Survival should not be regarded as normal, and yet the war years necessitated immense strength in all who wished to witness the end.

  43. The word 'Great' can be defined as: distinguished; highly significant or consequential; being in an extreme or notable degree and etc. In accordance to those definitions, the generation of WW2 can most definitely be noted as the 'Greatest Generation'. From 1939-1945 the world was practically stagnant, the spread of conflict around the world, helped to cease it from functioning normally. To add to all the deadly conflict, across the globe, people also suffered the Great Depression. Even through the hardships of war, death, poverty and religious discrimination, their are some other notable things that add to the greatness of the 'Greatest Generation'. The patriotism of human beings during this time to fight for what they believed in, and to fight for freedom from oppression was very prominent. Strength and hope were important qualities as well, like for the Jews and Indians. The Jews held strong to their beliefs, even through subjugation, and with that, somewhat had hope. The Indians had these same qualities as well, under Gandhi's influence, using the tactic of civil disobedience. Another prominent thing during this generation, was the break of gender stereotyping. During this war, women took over the jobs that men were "made to do" and "could only do". Consequentially, leading to the decrease of gender stereotyping today. These factors contribute greatly to the name of the "Greatest Generation", causing me to agree with the fact that it truly was. The generation of today, can aspire to have a little more strength, hope and long-suffering. Strength is what many people of today need to have, so they can even have hope. Also the people of this generation need the strength to stand for what they believe in and fight for it, if they truly want it. Long-suffering can also be said to be one of the qualities of the 'Greatest Generation'. Long-suffering is needed sometimes before taking action, it includes having patience, and many people of this generation need the strength to endure that. Even so, with these qualities, our generation should be able to take action, and not sit on goals and let others deter them. Aspiring for these things, and actually acquiring them, could lead us to be the next 'Greatest Generation', maybe.

  44. WWII was harsh and a miracle for anyone to make it out or to even to survive. Between the sickness and violence it was amazing for anyone to get out. The assessment of the people of the time are agreeable. I agree with all the people of the past. It was very hard for them all. With our generation, we can learn from our past. The good part is that we have more technology so that we're so more advanced and have a better chance.

  45. Well, anyone to have lived in the time of such a horrendous war and survived through it, at least in my book, definitely deserves to be called 'Great'. Although looking at all of the blogs gave me a little insight, I still can't even begin to imagine all of the terrible things that they went through. I think that our generation definitely needs to aspire to be more grateful for the kind of life we are living today. There are so many who take every aspect of their life for granted. But in all actuality, we are living in an Utopia compared to how things were for the 'Greatest Generation'.

  46. The World War II generation is referred to as "The Greatest Generation" because of everything the people during that time had to endure. The hardships that society faced and overcame justify the label given to this generation. Living through the war years required bravery, strength, and hope. These are all very important attributes to aspire to. People in today's generation need to remember what the World War II generation went through and how they overcame their problems. Hopefully, today's generation can look back on the past generation to inspire them to have strength during the bad times.

  47. People born in that generation lived through the war, so that's why the are called The Greatest Generation. I had a grandfather who fought valiantly in that war and I think he was great. I agree that some people from this generation are great, but not everyone. Surviving something terrible doesn't make you great, it's what you do with your life after it that does. If you fought in the war and are a racist pig that spits on others, I don't think you're that great. But if the war made you see how precious each moment is and how important life is, you're pretty great to me. The quality our generation should aspire to have is the ability to sacrifice. Those men and women sacrificed themselves for the greater good. Now they are heroes.

  48. The World War II generation is known as "The Greatest Generation " because the people during this time people really have to show their strength and bravery to get through this hard time. Not only was this a terrible time because these people had to live through a war , but also because they had to go through the war and the Great Depression simultaneously. Living through a war alone is too much to ask of anyone , so everyone who lived though this time deserves to be called great.

  49. Those who lived through WWII are referred to as the "Greatest Generation" because of everything they went through during the war. Even if someone wasn't living in a war zone, the war had some impact on their life. Maybe their food was rationed, or a relative died or fought in the war. All people from all social classes, religions, races, and genders suffered in some way, because the hardships of war do not discriminate. Men were sent to war, and women took over many of the jobs that were formerly reserved for men. Millions of people were killed because of discrimination towards their religion or race. Homes were blown up, freedom was taken away, people were killed, raped, and tortured, entire cities were decimated. The fact that people survived these atrocities and still showed kindness (the Berlin Airlift is an excellent example of this enduring kindness and generosity) throughout is why our culture views them as "great."
It is definitely important to remember all of the things people from that time lived through, and the kindness and strength that was shown during the war, but we also cannot forget that there was hatred throughout that period. When thinking of evil and hatred during WWII, the Nazi's are the most obvious example. Yes, these people committed some of the most atrocious crimes in history, but they weren't the only ones killing people during the war. The American soldiers that we remember and label as members of the "Greatest Generation" killed as well. They were shipped off to foreign lands and killed other people in the name of our country's freedom. Yes, those soldiers did a lot of good, but we cannot overlook or gloss over the bad that they did. A human life is a human life no matter what, and soldiers from many countries participated in taking away human lives because they believed what they were doing was right. American soldiers were fighting and killing in the name of our country's view of "justice" and "freedom," but Nazi soldiers were doing the same thing for their own country's "justice" and "freedom." Of course this does not justify what either side did, and when thinking about WWII and the "Greatest Generation," we must think of all the lives taken by both Allied and Axis powers. The actions of Nazi soldiers during the Holocaust were horrific and we must work hard to make sure actions like those are never repeated. However, we must remember WWII and the "Greatest Generation" as the complex issue it is. All of those soldiers killed because they believed they were doing the right thing. Is it really fair to put down one side as monsters while casting the other side in glory and referring to them as the "greatest"? Are the dead American soldiers a greater loss than the dead German ones? In the end, people from the "Greatest Generation" did suffer greatly and deserve to be remembered and applauded for all of the things they did for the world and for our country, but when we think back on their bravery, we must also remember the bravery of the people on the side that we were against.
The "Greatest Generation" does have lessons to offer our current generation. They fought against what things that were evil and unjust, even if they might've ended up doing some harm along the way. Our generation is not facing a world war, but we do have international struggles of our own. These struggles include the war in the Middle East, widespread racism, homophobia, and misogyny. We can learn the perseverance and bravery which we need to overcome these struggles from the past generation which overcame the struggles of their time.

  50. The generation who lived through WWII is thought of as the greatest generation because they liver through a time of so much pain, suffering, and change. There whole world was falling to pieces before them and yet they were able to build foundations for the world we live in now. I believe that this table is appropriate for some people who helped change and rebuild. But for those who stuck in the past and just pointed fingers instead of helping, they don't deserve to be called the Greatest Generation. I think our generation can aspire to have the strength that they had to go on. To see that yea things are looking really bad but what about the future. We can't just leave it like this. Always improving life. Never just sitting still.

  51. The people who belonged to the ‘Greatest Generation’ are called this because they went through so much; the Great Depression and a World War. They were able to withstand two, huge tragedies, then come back and rebuild the work force and the economy. I think that the people who lived through these awful events probably felt like they were the Greatest Generation, because for them it the worst set of events that anyone had lived through in the 20th century and because after every recession they were able to get back on their feet. Our generation needs to look back to our past generations and what they went through and had to give up, and realize that we take too much for granted. We need to be more thankful for what we have.

  52. The WWII generation is considered the Greatest Generation because so many things were going on, it was a miracle that people survived. This generation was probably the generation that had the most things happen. WWII and the Cold War were two hardships, then they had social issues, and economic issues in some nation. What they faced was nothing to what we face today, partially because we've learned from their mistakes. With their strength they were able to overcome the struggles and better their nation, therefore they're the greatest generation.

  53. This is the cool thing about history. We get to learn about and from ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Its so interesting how their stories would live on. Such people as Adolf Hitler, and Josef Stalin that we have learned about in class and in our book. But there were many disagreements happening in this time period, and many people were killed, that those who survived are a primary surce and insight on what truly occurred, not just what we see in movies. As some people are still unhappy, angry, sad and confused, at what happened and what they couldn't change that was left in the past, others still think it was (for example, Hitler's) right to do what they did; to be in charge behind these events. This, and the whole idea of teaching history, is to prevent it from happening again.

  54. The World War II generation has often been called "The Greatest Generation" due to the challenges society placed. Men were drafted, and taken from their jobs, families, and homes, and shipped to foreign countries far across the Atlantic and Pacific. Women worked factories, maintained facilities, and cared for their children. Each individual was presented with their own struggle, and instead of denying the hardship, they faced it. They stood up for themselves and their country, which is why they are known as "The Greatest Generation", or the generation who took on challenges and threw away cowardliness. I would surely agree with this label. They fought for this title, and they deserve it. These are the people that saw the Great Depression, the rise and fall of fascism, and the on going threat of war. They are very deserving, and truly are the greatest generation. Our generation can aspire to have their qualities of daily courage and devotion. Through hard work and determination, anything can be accomplished, as seen in The Great Generation's case. We can learn from both their attributes of triumph, and failure, and begin to create a new generation of successes and greatness.

  55. I think calling those that lived through the " Greatest Generation" is appropriate because they were born into, and survived, a time of war and social turmoil. A lot of social standards were changing due to the war, such as womens roll in society, which is difficult to adjust to. I think my generation isn't as strong as they were, but that we do have the same tendency to come together at hard times and find ways to really help those who need it.

  56. I believe that the World War II generation was called the greatest generation because of all the struggles that everyone had gone through. That generation had just gone through the Great Depression, and then had through another World War full of the loss of homes, the loss of many lives, and starvation. The World War II generation had gone through all of this and still survived and continued to fight for what they believed in. I do agree with This assessment of the people who lived through the war years. I think that my generation can aspire to be as brave and strong as the Wald War II generation.

  57. Those who were born into and lived during the World War II era were surrounded by many hardships every day. There were many political and economic problems that the people faced but they still made it their duty to help their country and support and provide for their families. The label "The Greatest Generation" really fits because it describes people who lived during the war and the Great Depression but still involved themselves in the war because they believed it was the right thing to do. If people like this existed today in our generation, the world would be a much better place. People would look past their own economical or social problems to aid their peers and assist those who really need it.

  58. I believe the Greatest Generation" was given this name because of the events this generation has experienced. This generation had fathers in WWI, had grown up in the Great Depression, and then fought in WWII. Which, I believe justifies their title. Our generation has been fortunate, compared to the Greatest Generation. But, this generation of Americans were great for more than those reasons. Those who weren't fighting in the war were still part of the war effort. Families back home would grow victory gardens, so more cans and unperishable food items could be used by soldiers. Shortages of materials occurred. For example, women wouldn't but nylon stockings, so the nylon could be used by soldiers. This is what makes this generation great. Their sense of nationalism, strength, teamwork, and determination brought them the future they wanted their children and grandchildren to have. Maybe with these same attributes, our generation can build a future for our children, a USA that is fair, safe, and thriving.

  59. World War II has often been called "The Greatest Generation" because of the people that had to live through it. The people obviously went through a lot, both emotionally and physically. I mean they did live during a war! The people of the generation survived during the killing of millions of people and the depression and damage that that brought psychologically. "The Greatest Generation" is a proper assessment for these people because they were the greatest generation. My generation can only aspire to be remembered as such. We need to learn to work together because we can't get through everything alone. Do you think that people got through the damaged world that they were living in alone? They didn’t. If we all could realize this, then maybe we will one day be a generation that will be remembered.

  60. The World War ll generation has often been called "The Greatest Generation" because of all of the challenges they had to face. Men, or even teenagers our age, were sent into a war zone where they risked their lives all day long. Women were forced to take on the men's treacherous work and raised children while they did this. If children lived in war zones, they had to seek shelter and they also needed to understand the sacrifices their parents made to keep their freedom. No, I do not especially agree with the assassination of people during this time, but i do understand that in certain cases, it was necessary. But, personally I do not think anyone deserves to die, when it is an action that you can bypass. I believe there are many things my generation can learn from this generation. For example, we can learn how courageous we should be during a time of death and despair. We can also learn how to act in a time of craziness. We learn to act calm, and do what we are told to do to get out of the dangerous times, and get the freedom we deserve.

  61. Yes. I believe that calling the people who were born and raised during ww2, the "greatest generation" because they truly were great! The some how made it through each of their own type of struggle. Families were broken, moved and destroyed. Men went to war, women worked and cared for their children. During on going war and political problems they remained calm and got what they needed done. They Conquered their problems head on without second guessing! Not only were they and are, one of the greatest generations but they most definitely deserve the title. The fought graciously for it.

  62. During World War II horrible things happened to people all around the world. So for a person or even kid to live through these events took strength. Mostly because there was fighting all around them and they even had fear of an atomic bomb. Yes I do believe that they are The Greatest Generation; to live through World War II and truly horrible events in history. Our generation can learn to be helpful and kind to anyone. Like all the soldiers who fought for so long in the war. Also to be thankful mostly because our generation is known for not being grateful for the things that they have. To look back on World War II and to be grateful for everything that hasn't happened us in our generation. Also to know that if you see any type of injustice try to stop it because it might change the person you are protecting.

  63. Millions of innocent people died fighting in the name of their country on the battlefield, many of the countries who participated in WWII and the Cold War were left war-torn with countless people homeless and without food or money. They experienced things no other generation had experienced before: nuke threats, mass genocide, constant threats from other countries, having to ration your food to supply another country. They deserved to be called great. No one should have to live in fear of having half the planet blow up at any second without warning, no one deserves to be murdered for their religion along with the rest of their family and friends while being starved and forced to slave away for long hours under the sun, the rain, and the cold. At the same time, women are starting to fight for their rights and the civil rights movement has started. The 'Greatest Generation' is a fitting title. Being strong, helping each other, working hard, making the best of things, our generation should aspire to have these traits without a doubt.

  64. I agree with this label because during this time the generation became stronger. It showed that there can be peace while having chaos. There was peace by people helping others in need and also standing up for what is right. People who lived through the war years became stronger and more grateful for what they had. It also made them realize for years to come that nothing like WWII should happen again. The people who lived through the war are wise now and realize they can help prevent wars in the future. Also that together people can overcome any obstacle by supporting each other and by believing in the rights they have. Our generation can aspire to prevent wars ahead, have faith in people when we are struggling, and know that we are strong and can overcome anything.

  65. The World War II Generation is called the Greatest Generation. This label could be justified by the fact that the people overcame hard times and kept going forward through the whole time. I agree with the assessment of the people that lived through the war because they went from the Great Depression to fighting in a war and got through the war. Some qualities my generation could aspire to have are tolerance, awareness of others, and creativeness.

  66. I think WWII is appropriately referred to as the "Golden Generation" because of the many financial, political, and cultural hardships that were faced all at the same time. Millions of people and nations were massacred and dictated by more powerful countries, and many lived in poverty and starvation. For this, I completely agree with the justification of this title. The "Golden Generation" was a very difficult time period to live in, but today, we are possibly the most spoiled generation of all existence. We take for granted all of the rights and privileges that we have today such as women's rights, national in dependence, and even things like Cable TV and Twitter. 70-80 years ago, people there was almost a world-wide struggle for survival, and today kids complain about not having "anything to eat", when they actually usually do have food in their fridge, just not what they want to eat. I mean, during WWII, even sugar was rationed and barely accessible, and today we can literally walk 5 minutes away from our school and by a large glacial mudslide at Coffee Emporium whenever we want. I think that our generation would benefit greatly from being more appreciative for what we have, being less narcissistic, and being less wasteful of our resources.

  67. I think the reason behind the World War II generation being called the Greatest Generation is because it was the generation that got through the war and worked hard to recover from the war and the cold war. I do agree with this assessment of this generation because this generation lived through everything that happened in the war and many fought in the war. I think the qualities that the Greatest Generation that my generation can aspire to have is determination to help out who deserves and needs it.

  68. I believe it was called "The greatest generation" because all of the people in world war 2, dead and alive , were and are , strong people. I think it's funny how war. Tears and pulls people together . In this case , Holocaust survivors had to stick together to remain positive . They only had eachother to rely on , to get support from. I think this is a great label for people in World War Two to have . Everything they are is something I wish America would be . Strong , United, and supportive . I think we should aspire to be all of those things . I mean look what happens when certain groups of people get together and stand up for what they believe in and become United , supportive of one another , and strong. People and groups such as women for women's rights,
Ethnic groups and their rights ,
    And lifestyle rights.
And all of these have happened , and/or are in the process of happening. I think if all of America could do this , we would be in great shape . Learn how to love and unite rather than alienate.

  69. The WWII generation was often called "The Greatest Generation" for many reasons. Some of which are how they managed to get thought the Great Depression and the War; both of which were horrible events to have endured. But thought them, they grew stronger physically and mentally. Not only did they become stronger but after the Great Depression and the War had ended; they learned to appreciate life more. I agree with the statement to some degree. Most of the people grew in character but there were others who were bitter and cold-hearted. This goes to show how "surviving" and experiencing something are two very different things. Now I don't mean that if you experience something you will become a bitter old sourpuss who hates everyone but in this instance that is "generally" how it went. The qualities of those who were mean are not the qualities I would like for our generation to aspire to have. I would much rather our generation carry on the qualities of those who were kind-hearted, strong, brave, courageous, appreciative of life, and generally just nicer people.

  70. What it is about this time period that gives it its label is all the pain, economically, socially, geographically, and politically that everybody had to go through. Everybody was affected by that war. That entire generation was. And they had to rise up and stay strong, and either fight back. or cease fire, or fix things that had been destroyed physically and mentally. Honestly I don't agree with that assessment. I do believe it holds great truths, but WWII isn't the only horrible thing that has happened to this world. Who are we to label an entire Generation, when we don't know what other generations, and other groups of people have gone through? I think that of these qualities, my generation can learn to be A LOT more grateful for what they have. To be less petty and whiny about " first world problems" . And to take more responsibility and maturity. You guys. Its not always your mom's fault that things in your life don't go as planned. It's not you mom's fault that you didn't get everything you wanted in your lunch boxes. Pack your own lunch. And we mess up all the time, and have to own up to it, and get over it, and guess what. DEAL WITH IT. I think our generation has to toughen up a bit. Because I haven't lived through it all, and neither have you. But things could be a lot worst. So be happy.

  71. Yes I do believe this is a great title for this time of WW2 because even though it was a struggle for families and the people in the war. I think it is a great title.

  72. This generation was called the "Greatest Generation" because these men and women fought because it was the right thing to do; not for fame and recognition. "They have given the succeeding generations the opportunity to accumulate great economic wealth, political muscle, and the freedom from foreign oppression to make whatever choices they like." (Tom Brokaw) I agree that this was a great time. The people who lived through this era had to have hope, determination and perseverance, something that my generation is greatly lacking. We are a generation of instant gratification and technology and haven't had to face the struggles that these people did. They faced great challenges, but remained positive and humble throughout it all.

  73. The generation of WWII lived in constant worry and fear. From thousands of innocent people in Europe being persecuted, to those who lived in the Great Depression, everyone around the world endured some genre of suffering and hardship (some more than others). I believe these reasons support the title - The Greatest Generation - given to the people who lived through the war years. Despite much chaos and many challenges people remained strong, faithful and cooperative. I think my generation may aspire to remain strong and faithful in the face of trial and to be cooperative with others through the challenges we face. In addition, the post-WWII generations have not endured such hardships as those in the WWII generation. I believe that peoples’ strongest qualities surface when they are faced with a challenge. The WWII generation was called upon and rose to the occasion and this is what sets them apart from all other generations of who have not faced such hardships.

  74. The generation of people who lived through WWII are often referred to as the Greatest Generation because of the numerous character traits that people developed in order to survive and prosper in such dire and abnormal conditions created by the wars and depressions of the time. This generation as a whole holds many positive descriptions such as strong-willed, frugal, realistic, and possessing a just-do-what-you-need-to-do attitude, and all of these have roots in how people dealt with the world around them to survive. These characteristics developed as a result of things like needing to work more than ever at your job to support your family and your country, or being limited on rations more and more each day to pay for such a costly war effort. I very much agree with this generation being called 'The Greatest Generation' because of what severe hardships I have read of or 'seen' them go through and I strive to take on many of the qualities this generation is generalized to have. Our generation could benefit from acquiring many of these traits themselves, such as a courage not just to wage a war against what we think society is wrong in but also to do simple important things like take the time to go a little further at what we do to get the results we want or need.

  75. It is crazy to think about how damaging World War II was. To truly be great you have to overcome something, and the hardships faced throughout this war are definitely things that that generation had to overcome. To live through those years would have been so emotionally draining that this has to be the greatest generation. I think our generation can aspire to have the strength and the power to just keep pushing forward and to fight for what you believe in.

  76. World War II is known as The Greatest Generation because of everything that was done to protect others. The lives of family members and friends were taken during this war. It is a job that requires a 100% attention, commitment, and needs someone that will sacrifice their lives for others and do any and everything to get the job done. A soldier really has to go beyond the requirements needed to fulfill each and every requirement. Everyone in World War II had many challenges come their way but instead of running away, they dug deep down inside themselves and found the way to persevere. This is why it is known as The Great Depression. Everything people did for their country, families, friends, and fellow army members. This is a good way to describe World War II.

  77. The Greatest Generation label, while appropriate, is a bit generous. I don't believe that we have it harder today, I'm not saying that many weren't hurt or affected by the war. I simply don't believe that the lab should be given to those who weren't affected by the war, they simply didn't earn it. However the amount of pain, suffering, work, stress, blood, sweat, and tears that was given by all those who were actually influenced, does justify the label. I believe that our generation could learn a bit more respect from the other. We need to worry less about the apple watch, and more on learning how to create. Less time snap chatting and more time with family. We need to learn how to no longer live, but instead thrive in society.

  78. Those in this generation endured great loss, great worry, great hardship. They needed to have great hope and great strength. This generation did, and that it is what really makes a generation great. So many people of every status were impacted by the war, just as all people today are impacted by today's global issues. Today we can hope our nations take note of how things have been handled in the past and not only learn from it, but improve it.

  79. After returning home from after the war, soldiers would have to deal with huge amounts of unbearable trauma, and many physical disabilities. They also would return with very little help from the government, making them easily a part of the greatest generation. The women also overtook very hard jobs. When the men left for war, they'd take over their jobs in fields they had never worked in before. This would also put them in the greatest generation.

  80. The WWII Generation has been glorified quite often in history as a noble and heroic society built both to protect and fight for its people. Courage and pride make up that definition of "greatness”. I do not agree with this label. A world at war with itself can not call its generation great by any means. Bravery does not constitute greatness. Pride does not constitute greatness. The generation of the war years could never be “great,” let alone “the greatest.” Some qualities my generation could still aspire to have would be endurance (but not stubbornness), trust (but not mindlessness), and faith (but not blind faith).

  81. World War ll is considered the Greatest Generation because they went through so much during the time. That generation had to overcome a lot of things. They were a very strong generation. So many people were killed, and so many families were torn apart. The people who had to live through this era were indeed determined, strong, and so much hope. I believe that my generation doesn't have much of that. Those who lived through WWll had to be independent. My generation is not independent. We know that someone will always be there for us. That's why WWll was considered the "Greatest Generation". They were powerful, and independent. They weren't going down without a fight. They truly struggled in life to stay alive. But they were determined to stay alive and help their families. I believe that's mostly what my generation lacks, determination. We give up way too easily. What the people in that era went through was horrible. Awful things happen in every generation, however, I believe they had it worse. Not only did one bad thing happen to them, multiple bad things happened to those people. They deserve to be known as " The Greatest Generation".

  82. The reason that would justify the label of The Greatest Generation is that they went through a lot of trouble and survived it. I don't agree with this assessment of the generation that lived through the war years because it glorifies that violence means that you will get the gold star for living through it. If you were to call a generation the greatest generation it should be the generation that lived through peace so that it inspires more generations to be like them instead of showing that the one way ticket to glorification is tragedy.

  83. During this time period America was kind of given the "heroic" title. They were given this title because of their efforts in the war and that is why I think they are known as the Greatest Generation. I don't really agree with this because this was like the second most violent time period for me and being violent, even with a reason, is not the same thing as being heroic. Things we can take from this generation are being brave, generous and fighting for the things you believe in.

  85. The World War II generation could be justified as The Greatest Generation not only because of all the hardships people faced, but also because of the amount of change the world was going through at the time in terms that countries were trying to create the best possible weapons, which means that there would've been a lot of emphasis/advances in various sciences and math. I agree with this assessment of the people who lived through the war years because of the emotional and physical stress people went through, but I think our generation can aspire to pass on the strength/perseverance that the World War II generation had and become even greater than the Greatest Generation.

  86. The generation of World War II can be called the Greatest Generation because there was so much change that happened over the course of those years and it can really define a person.
